How a Wish Employee Builds Inclusive Community Engagement

Black History Month: Employee Spotlight

Here at Wish, we have several Employee Resource Groups (ERG) focused on building a sense of community where employees can connect and support one another. For Black History Month, we’re spotlighting our NOIRE ERG Group, which is led by Tonya Coleman, Sr. Workforce Planning Manager at Wish. As the head of the group, Tonya works to elevate and promote an inclusive community of Wishers, while fostering a sense of belonging. She recently sat down with Monica Kielawa, Wish’s Manager, Employer Brand & Talent Communications, to talk about what it means to be part of the Black community today, and her involvement with NORIE at Wish.

Monica: Tell us about yourself.
Tonya: I moved from Atlanta, Georgia to Los Angeles, California in November 2018. I have worked in different industries in my 25+ year professional experience, with a focus on customer support. I enjoy traveling, art, hiking, running, and culinary food experiences. I have been an employee at Wish for 7 months in the Customer Support Department as a Sr. Workforce Planning Manager. I stepped up to take the lead on NOIRE ERG for Wish last year because I wanted to be part of a community to spread awareness, inclusivity, and positivity.

Monica: What is NOIRE’s mission here at Wish?
Tonya: NORIE at Wish is committed to creating a community and space for Black people and allies to connect, collaborate and raise awareness of the multifaceted Black experience. We strive to bridge the gap between Wish and the community through education, events, and sharing diverse experiences.

Monica: Why does Black History Month matter to you?
Tonya: I believe it is important to acknowledge all the incredible and difficult achievements of African-Americans from our past, present, and future that have made impacts (or will) on our future.

Monica: How do you bring authenticity to work every day?
Tonya: I stay true to my morals and my belief system. I keep an open mind, positive attitude, and speak genuinely to my peers.

Monica: How did you get involved with NOIRE at Wish?
Tonya: Since I am relatively new to Wish, and working remotely, I saw this as an opportunity to meet more people within the company. It is also a great way to participate in giving back to the community. When the leadership slot became available, I was ready for the challenge. I stepped up and have loved leading the group.

Monica: How can allies be more involved during Black History Month and throughout the year?
Tonya: One great way to be an ally is to support minority businesses. Another great way to support is by joining employee resource groups as this can help generate conversation, collaboration, and understanding on diversity initiatives.  Finally, support your local community through volunteering outreach.

NOIRE at Wish will honor Black History Month this February through a series of educational employee communications, as well as virtual events geared towards remembering and celebrating Black contributions to American society. The group plans to continue to host educational programming throughout the year.
